The Emotional Struggle of Creating an Online Business

Learn How to Protect Your Sanity While Building Something Meaningful

It is sad that some people sell the digital dream as the ultimate passive income source. They might tell you that all you need is hard work and a good strategy. But they rarely talk about the other “side effects” that come with it.

No one prepares you for the days when you spend hours sitting at your desk working, but see zero revenue. You start wondering what you are doing wrong. Then you start to question your choices, doubt yourself, and realize that your future is uncertain.

If you are currently trying to make money online and feel completely drained, you are not failing. We have all been through that. You are experiencing the expensive cost of creating something meaningful online. In fact, it is the cost of success in general, so don’t add to the struggle more mental pain.

The truth about what happens behind the screen, and how to survive it:

Our expectations can be justifiable, but too early. When you leave your standard job to pursue an online income stream, you expect freedom. That is and should be the end goal for many of us. However, we don’t expect problems and properly prepare for them. So, what you actually get is a whole new set of unexpected problems.

Normally, in a job, your effort usually equals a guaranteed paycheck at the end of the month. In the digital world and business in general, that is almost always not the case. You can spend weeks putting together nice, original content, creating and designing the perfect products, or building a beautiful website without making a single penny.

This creates a massive gap between expectation (freedom) and reality (little or no returns). In those days, I remember waking up every day (being my own boss) and having to decide everything on my own. There was no manager telling you what to do, which sounds great until you realize you are responsible for every wrong decision. What is worse? You can’t fire yourself – unless you have the means – so you will have to improve and go on, no matter what. Then you start working longer hours simply to outrun the fear of getting nowhere. Going nowhere is part of the journey and the full journey (see our article on this regard). For now, let’s explore the four traps and how to avoid them.

The 4 Psychological Traps of the Online Hustle:

Building something meaningful online can trigger certain mental traps. So, if you don’t notice these traps, they might burn you out and lead to a huge disappointment and eventually quitting.

1. Algorithm Anxiety

No matter what form of content you put online, the truth is your income depends on algorithms you don’t control. Sometimes a simple search update or platform change can drop your traffic by more than half overnight. This might lead you to a life full of worries.

I have experienced this firsthand when I built a sports website that had 160 pages. It took me months of hard work to finish building that website. I made sure every page deserved its place on the website. I fulfilled all the technical SEO requirements. That led to them all being indexed really fast by Google. Only to discover that Google deindexed more than 140 and left me with only 16 standing pages. After a long research and investigation, I knew that there is a recent update on Google indexing rules.

I can tell you that I am still recovering from this shock, and finding ways to fix this.

2. Another Huge Trap is the Feeling of Isolation

Working online often means working alone. Your communication means are: text, emails, and analytics boring language. Over time, your real-world social life might shrink. I personally find it hard to connect with people who don’t understand the online hustle. That is because I would spend a lot of time and energy explaining what I am doing and why.

3. Not Being Able to Differentiate Between Living and Working

When your income comes from your laptop or phone, your work follows you everywhere. I find resting started to feel like wasting time. You check your stats while eating, before sleeping, and the moment you wake up. Your brain never turns off. This can be less of a trap to some people. However, if you have other duties and people to take care of, this can be a huge trap.

4. Metric Obsession

This is similar to the algorithm anxiety. It is when you start measuring your worth by daily page views, subscriber counts, and ad revenue. So, a high revenue day might make you feel great. Whereas a low revenue day can ruin your weekend. In the end, numbers might be one of the biggest factors that decide whether you are allowed to feel good about yourself.

How to Protect Your Sanity While Building Online

I believe you can build something meaningful online without giving up your mental health. This might require that you change how you operate. Here are some suggestions:

  • Treat Numbers as Data, not a Report Card: A drop in traffic or sales means something in your process needs adjusting. It does not mean you are a failure. You must separate your personal value from your analytics.
  • Set Hard Shut-off Times: You need to pick a time every evening when the laptop closes and work notifications turn off. Protect that sleep time like an important asset because it is.
  • Find and Keep Some Offline Hobbies: You should have things in your life that may not make you money, but you love to do them anyway. Play a sport, read a physical book, or simply walk outside in the fresh air. This will give your brain spaces where money doesn’t matter.
  • Find a good, helpful community and peers: Connect with a few people who are doing similar work. Because you will need a safe and understanding space where you can admit things are tough, help each other out.
  • Lastly, You Should Redefine Success: You need to know that the internet is a dynamic place; it changes fast, but real businesses take time to build. Speed is useless if you quit six months from now because you are unable to continue. It is far better to build slowly at a pace you can sustain for years.

Always remember why you started in the first place. You wanted online income to give you a better life, so do not let the screen take over your entire existence. Keep building, adjust your steps when things don’t work, but take care of your mind along the way.
